Towa - Japan's oldest Island by Stuart Isett

After almost half a century of stunning economic growth, Japan may be facing it’s severest crisis yet. This crisis, though, does not stem from the continuing economic troubles that have dominated headlines since the nation’s economic bubble burst in the late 80s. Over the next 50 years Japan’s population is expected to drop from 126 million to 100 million, and that’s only if government estimates of a recovery in birthrates hold true. With these dramatic demographic changes, Japan’s work force will rapidly shrink while a huge elderly population will strain the nation’s resources and social security system.
