In recent years, the Philippine’s government has boasted of the country’s rise to industrial ‘tiger’ status. As part of the country’s push for development the exploitation of natural resources has accelerated. On the southern island of Mindanao, Mount Diwalwal, with its huge gold deposits, has been at the heart of government efforts to "put the Philippine mining industry back on track” according to Horacio Ramos, the director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Unfortunately for the 30,000 residents and small scale miners on Diwalwal, that track may well run right over them.
