Albany, Western Australia - Whale of a Town by Philip Gostelow
The view from the deck of the whale chaser reveals a horizon of blue skies and blue water. Ahh, but what’s this I hear above the sound of the engines - an announcement of a whale spotting. “Thar She Blows!” Harpoons are readied and the chase is on. But there’s no quarry in the waters ahead. My eyes aren’t deceiving me - the ship is real but the audio re-enactment isn’t. Here at Albany’s premier tourist attraction, Whale World, the site of the original whale station has been redeveloped to educate visitors while retaining a tangible authenticity. A five-hour drive south of Perth, in Western Australia, and facing the Southern Ocean as it does, Albany is noticeably cooler than the sun baked State capital. There’s a distinctively nautical ambience here, with neat timber cottages facing a harbor backdrop. It’s a thriving regional town with a big history.
