Due to declining prices for tin on international markets and the closing of state-owned mines, life has grown increasingly more destitute for Potosí's miners over the last decade. In an effort to scrape by, more and more children are expected to leave school early and join their fathers, grandfathers, brothers and uncles in backbreaking labour that has barely changed since the 16th century.
