Fish Industry in Turkey by Fatih Pinar
The number of boats rose from 8.646 in 1991 to 17.696 in 2002. But there is no ship in Turkey capable of ocean fishing. 2.5 million people earn a living from fishing and all its sub-sectors. Turkey’s fishery products’ export is about 100.000 US dollars. In developed countries, around 20 kg of fish is consumed per person, while the figure for Turkey is just 6 kg. And this is due to Turkey’s relative inexperience in this sector and its underdeveloped marine culture. The fishing season starts on 1st September each year and ends on 1st May. A fisherman’s annual income is about 10.000 Euro. With the adaption process of UN, quotas will be implemented on the number of ships old ships will be banned from fishing, and unregistered fishing will be impossible. small scale fishermen are therefore understandably very wary of UN laws, as they threaten the fishermen’s livelihood and way of life.
