A Lesbian Family in Minsk by Andrei Liankevich

There are around 500 homosexual people in Minsk, however, the majority of them are afraid and do not want to speak openly about it. Some of them prefer to move to Minsk as there is higher concentration of people and easier to remained unnoticed, although there are also a higher number of artistic people who are more sensitive and understandable.  There are a few places in Minsk where gay and lesbian people can meet, talk, share the ideas and find understanding.
Officially, there are no special clubs or newspaper. One of the magazines on gays and lesbians was shut down a few years ago, and servers block web pages dedicated to sexual minority. A few attempts during last years to organize the gay pride were turned down by the government authorities. It is also true that Belarusian officials do their best to prevent the representation of sexual minority in the society, by closing access to public space and provoking aggressive attitude (for example, by showing negative image of gay people on Belarusian TV). All these don’t make the life of people with homosexual orientation easier and happier.
