Working Places by Urban Golob

Back in the day of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovenia was its least developed part. Yet due to all industry and the Empire's openness toward Central Europe that we had recieved the same Slovenia became the flagship of development in the new states that have emerged later. The traditionall openness to Europe and reputation of being the most developed republic in Yugoslavia turned out useful again when we declared independency. But independence brought a new set of problems with it. The Yugoslav market was gone, expences of work were to high, and the transformation of the economy became urgent overnight. Many workers lost their jobs. Actually, unemployment has been on the rise since late 1980s and reached its peak in 1993 when almost 140.000 people were unemployed.
