Europe's Ultimate Border by Heinz Tesarek
As the European Union shifts its Schengen borders to the east by the end of the year, travelling without passport through the whole continent as far as Belarus and the Ukraine will come true. But are the nine new Schengen-members capable of protecting the common external border effectively? And are they doing enough to prevent massive migration and crime from infiltrating the EU? An on-site inspection leads to Eastern Slovakia, where the police play Big Brother to fight border crime and illegal migration.
Just three years ago it was not more than 250 police officers, who used to patrol the 98 kilometre long Slovakian border to the Ukraine. By now, as a result of intense pressure from Brussels, the number rose to 950 specially trained personnel. And they are desperately needed, since the border to the Ukraine used to be quite porous for a very long time. Experts estimate that still last year up to 20.000 immigrants tried to cross the border illegally, having just one final destination in mind: the European Union.
