Africans in St. Petersburg by Max Sher
This photo essay is an attempt to look at the everyday life of Africans based in St.Petersburg through their own perspective.
For Russians, the word ‘racism’ was until recently associated with something very faraway and exotic, with plantations full of black slaves in Brazil or cinemas for coloured only in the US. Of course, there is no racial segregation here but you can ask any person of African descent living here what is the most serious concern for him or her and the answer will most probably be the same: racism.
They come here in quest for knowledge: Russian education is of good quality while university fees are affordable for many. Most leave after graduating but some stay on for post-graduate studies or because they get married. But unlike some time ago when they really liked it here, now life became rather difficult psychologically.
