Cynology lessons by Andrei Liankevich

150 years ago Duke Radzivil placed a training of wild bears in Smorgon city, known as  "Smorgonskaya Academy". Trained bears for the fun of the Royal family and ordinary people on markets and special events. Probably, that is the reason why after the USSR collapse the dog training centre was established there. And incidentally, the bear is portrayed on the the emblem of Smorgon-based dogs' training centre of the Border Troops. From 80 to 100 dogs annually are trained and sent to serve at the center. Together with traditional for border guards German Shepherd Dog, also Labrador and Belgian Shepherd Dogs are trained there. Before the "real work" , dogs are trained and pass examinations. The training process consists of three steps: a preparatory, primary (animal training courses depend on service types) and the training course of dogs directly at the specific unit. "Not Satisfactory" has received on an exam, not except the chance to continue dogs' training. Dogs can fail exams for different reasons: bad eyesight or sense of smell, timidity of loud sounds (shooting). But "professionally useless" animals are wildly sold - they serve as good guards. Normally  dogs serve for 8 years.
