Ossetia by Igor Starkov
The Ossetians are a small people living in the North Caucasus and the only surviving descendants of ancient Alanian tribes whose cultural and military influence spread over vast areas from Asia to Western Europe and Africa in the first millennium AD. The Alanian heritage can be observed in many European and Asian cultures (a good example is the name Alain popular in France) but only Ossetians preserve a historical memory about it. They have a joke that their ancestors possessed huge territories but have only left a small parcel of land and nothing grows on it.
