The Gold Museum in Bogota - El Museo del Oro by Fausto Giaccone

The Gold Museum is the most important and original of the approximately 50 museums which Bogotá proudly boasts. Even if quite recently founded (its first purchase dates back to 1939), this first-rate museum has already acquired the role of a link between the ancient Colombian civilizations, which flourished in the region before the arrival of Spanish colonizers, and modern Colombia. Colombia is apparently more and more interested in finding out about its anthropological origins, to openly identify them with the indigenous ancient societies’ outlook on the world, their mythology, their ethnic traditions and their great artistic realizations. Their marvellous gold, ceramics, bone, pottery and seashell artefacts enrich the museum’s large showcases. Among these communities are the Tairona, the Muisca, the Kimbaya, the authors of the colossal stone statues of San Agustin and of the sumptuous graves of Tierradentro.
