Last Days of the Hotel Kyjev – Eastern Europe’s Coolest Hotel Faces Demolition by James Ball

Hotel Kyjev was designed by Slovak architect Ivan Matusik as part of the wider central shopping complex in Bratislava Centrum known as Kammene Namestie, completing in 1973. A stunning example of modernist design from the socialist period, its central location and general state of dilapidation has tempted developers for many years. With a tight-lipped proposal from a British developer set to almost certainly demolish the hotel, it looks as though the last days of the Kyjev are with us. Information concerning the Kyjev’s fate is calculatedly scarce, despite repeated requests from the general public for news of one of Bratislava’s most loved modernist icons. The developers website simply states ‘2008’.
