Myeongdong Kaleidoscope - Seoul’s Youth Culture Heartland by Philip Gostelow

As you wander the streets of Myeongdong it becomes apparent that you’re not so much walking through the neighbourhood as being swept up in an unfolding spectacle.  Just as happened when I first left my hotel, nestled in a laneway amid Myeongdong, the kaleidoscopic carnival of sounds, colours and wafting aromas from cooking pots aroused the wonder in me. Venturing around a corner, entering into a wider street, a gyrating barker (promoter) aided by the backing of a rhythmic hip hop drum beat, yelled an address to attract the throngs of shoppers to his store’s sale.  Senses are constantly being taunted with information.  There’s nothing terribly subtle about commerce in Myeongdong. Without doubt this is Seoul’s most vibrant centre for youth culture and fashion.
