Vipula 2008 - A too big house for Vipula by Agostino Pacciani
Vipula is a fishmonger. Before the tsunami he had a small shop in the port of Tangalle in the South of Sri Lanka. This town suffered a lot from the huge tidal wave. On December 26th at about 9 am the sea level in the port decreases abnormally and some people predict that this announces a strong wave. Together with his wife and his daughter Vipula runs away towards the hill. In just a few seconds their house and their business are going to be ravaged. A large cash-for-work program will allow them to gain a little money by clearing and by reorganizing the devastated zones. A no-build security area (buffer-zone) will be defined to prevent the reconstruction of houses near to the sea. Vipula and his family cannot live in their former district any longer. In 2006, thanks to international aid and to the humanitarian organisations this family received a house which is far bigger and far more comfortable than they would ever have been able to purchase. But about 3 km away from the seaside. Despite the chance of having a new home Vipula is not satisfied…..
