Collect Your Garbage for Two Weeks by Julia Wesely
“Humans in their natural state contrasted with society’s packaging obsession and the waste this produces”. This is the motto of Julia Wesely’s latest photographic series confronting a problem in today’s world. Packaging is design and it is garbage, it presents an object and it covers it up. And packaging is disposed of as quickly as can be - separated if possible - so that we, the target consumers, can ease our consciences and feel we have done something good for the environment. Julia Wesely found people from various walks of life, representing very different target markets for the packaging and consumer products industries, to participate in this project. For two weeks, the participants collected their private rubbish, except for that which was packed only by Mother Nature and was biodegradable. The packaging was assembled into a design object representing a certain field of activity or target market and was then photographed in front of a white background together with the participant, who was himself “unpackaged”.
