A famous rule in Nepal describes the situation, why many girls don’t have other alternatives, than working in the Entertainment Sector: “Obey your father when you are a daughter, obey your husband when you are a wife, and obey your son when you are a mother.” Girls don't carry on the bloodline of the family and are seen as wealth for the family of the husband. Therefore it's a waste of money to invest in an education or good healthcare of a daughter. Everything the girl gets, she brings with her to her new family. A dowry has to be paid to the family of the husband. Once the girl is married she is the property of her husband and the family is no longer responsible for her. Many girls are coming each year to Kathmandu under false promises. People from the city visit the small villages and bring nice dresses with them. They tell the girls they can make a lot of money with nice jobs, if they come to the city. When they arrive in Kathmandu, the girls get registered as “cottage workers” and have usually no other possibility than start to work in a “Dance Bar” or a “Cabin Restaurant”. Once in that business the girls are vulnerable being sold to other countries like India or the Gulf States. As prostitution is illegal in Nepal, the girls are under no protection of the law. NGOs are trying to help those girls stepping out of the sector. In their Drop-in centres, they are educating the girls in tailoring or hairdressing to give them other possibilities than working in the red-light area.
