Traditional Whaling in Indonesia by Stuart Isett
Lamalera is the last place on earth where traditional whale hunts exist. Unlike other indigenous whale hunting communities that use engine boats and explosive harpoons, in Lamalera it’s a fair fight, using tools little changed in the 200 years since the first Lamalerans set to sea. Although Indonesia is not a signatory to the International Whaling Commission, the IWC has exempted the village’s hunts because they’re strictly for subsistence and not harmful to sperm whale populations.
