Fairies of Prilip - Fairies who do not put the clocks toward by Michael Appelt

The Romani of Prilep are masters of integration and are able to reconcile different centuries and religions. Many know Vienna's Meidlinger Hauptstrasse just as well as their own Macedonian Marshal Tito Boulevard. Golden lions perch on the gypsum balustrade of the veranda and guard the most beautiful house in the Roma district of Prilep. There is a small Indian God next to a garden gnome on the windowsill; the pink filmy curtain is blowing gently. Denis, Ayhan and a few other young men in truck suits are standing in front of the house, their gold chains flashing. They crowd their heads together and marvel audibly: "You are from Vienna, are you? Really? Which district are you from?" they ask in their unique Balkan German. Ayhan used to live in the twelfth district, "Do you know the Meidlinger Hauptstrasse?" But he also likes the tenth district. Before coming back a year ago to Prilep to work as a policeman he spent three years working as a cleaner for the Viennese city trains. After work he went to a gym in the tenth district. This is what Ayhan is also doing in Prilep, but not today, because today the Romani of Prilep are here to celebrate Djurdjevdan. It is St. George's Day, when they make a pilgrimage to the Dabnica Planina - a mountain above the town. It is their special way of welcoming the summer in Central Macedonia.
