The Kunstkammer of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien is unique. In the late Middle Ages, but also during the Renaissance and the Baroque, princes assembled encyclopedic Kunst- und Wunderkammern (literally, chambers of art and natural wonders) as a comprehensive survey of contemporary knowledge. Emperors and princes collected rare, curious and exceptional objects and commissioned objets d’art that documented the artists’ virtuosity. The new Kunstkammer was opened in March 2013.
